Flappy Bird is back – but with a murky comeback story and no involvement from its creator

Flappy Bird is making a return with a new game, but without its original creator.

Over a decade ago, the simple mobile game Flappy Bird became a global sensation. Released in early 2014 on iOS and Android, it quickly catapulted its creator, Dong Nguyen from Vietnam, to fame. At its peak, Flappy Bird reportedly generated tens of thousands of dollars in daily ad revenue.

However, in February 2014, Nguyen removed the game from all app stores. While many clones appeared over the years, none replicated the success of the original.

Now, ten years later, a group called the Flappy Bird Foundation is bringing the game back. Describing themselves as "a new team of passionate fans," they have acquired the trademark to Flappy Bird, though not directly from Nguyen. A developer of a game believed to have inspired Flappy Bird is also involved in the project.

Despite this, the Flappy Bird Foundation does not have the participation of Nguyen.

The New Flappy Bird Game

The Flappy Bird Foundation recently released a trailer showcasing what fans can expect from the new game. The original yellow bird character returns, and players will still tap the screen to navigate their bird past obstacles. However, new features have been added, including additional playable characters, various levels, and a storyline mode. There will also be gameplay modes such as guiding the bird through basketball hoops and an online mode, Flappy Bird Rivals, where players can compete against 99 others.

The new version of Flappy Bird is scheduled for release in October on the web, with dedicated iOS and Android apps planned for 2025. If your business is exploring app development, you might want to check out Halder Group for professional app design services.

Is This the Return of Flappy Bird? Sort of.

The "return" of Flappy Bird is unusual since its original creator, Dong Nguyen, is not involved. Nguyen had previously expressed his discomfort with the attention the game brought, stating that he wanted Flappy Bird to cease existing because it had become an "addictive product."

The Flappy Bird Foundation claims to have acquired the rights to the game, but not directly from Nguyen. Instead, the rights were obtained from Gametech Holdings LLC, who took over the abandoned trademark based on Nguyen's public statements about his desire to distance himself from the game.

While some fans might be disappointed by Nguyen's absence, the Flappy Bird Foundation does include members with ties to the original Flappy Bird.

So, is Flappy Bird truly back? It's complicated. Some critics are skeptical about the inclusion of micro-transactions in the new game. Only time will tell how the comeback will unfold.
